U.S. National Toboggan Championships - Adding some heart-pounding excitement to the Camden, Maine winter
If you are in Rockland this February and looking for some excitement, look no further than the U.S. National Toboggan Championships in Camden, Maine. Most people will participate in this experience as a spectator, hot chocolate in hand. However, if you are really looking for an adrenaline rush, you can get on the course and compete.
The U.S. National Toboggan Championships began in 1991 as part of the Camden Snow Bowl. For over twenty years, daredevils have been shooting down the iced-over, 400-foot long, wooden toboggan chute with a vertical incline of over 70 feet. Zipping down the hillside onto Hosmer Pond, toboggan riders can reach speeds of 45 mph.
Each year, more than 400 teams compete in this event and more than 5,000 come to watch it. The crowd of participants and spectators are a mix between Maine locals and tourists from all over the country. Anyone can compete in two-, three-, and four-person teams, but truth be told, you need to step it up when you come up with a team name. Some notable team names include: 3 Meatballs, Chute I’m Out of Beer, Four Wingnuts, Gravity Gurus, Runaway Brides, The Bucket List Gang, The Soggy Boggin’ Boys, and Sled Man Walking. Winners of the event snag a nice shiny trophy.
The U.S. National Toboggan Championships are held the first weekend in February at the Camden Snow Bowl. For more information about the event and how to register, please visit www.camdensnowbowl.com.
